Intelligent field instruments and meters are the intelligent road towards Industry 4.0

  • March 4,2022.

The development of science and technology and industry has continuously pushed human progress to new heights. The great leap in the history of technological development is called the industrial revolution. Now, we are entering a new stage: Industry 4.0

The first, second, and third industrial revolutions brought about steam power and hydraulic production, mass electrification, and computer technology, respectively, and the focus of the fourth revolution shifted to digital automation factories.Enterprises comprehensively and widely use digital automation technology to improve efficiency through automatic control. Not only can we achieve predictive maintenance, but also we can improve the yield and supply efficiency.Through fully networked operation, we can better plan supply routes, reduce storage costs, and ensure improved utilization. In an era of rising demand, the machine shutdown is very costly.Networking control plants facilitate planning to help prevent production disruptions.

Industry 4.0

The focus of the Industry 4.0 era is not just on developing new facilities. How to continue to fully utilize and expand the existing infrastructure to achieve rapid amortization of digital factories is another important factor from a cost perspective. For operators of smart plants, the acquisition costs and requiring significant structural changes are important criteria that must be evaluated in a cost-benefit analysis.A key aspect of achieving smart factories is the use of field instruments with intelligent processing capabilities to support factory monitoring and diagnosis, and networking with other new field instruments. These smart transmitters can be distributed throughout the plant, different sensors can interconnect, and can monitor components that were not previously connected.Field instrumentation is the general basic intelligent unit to realize Industry 4.0.These units should be considered more carefully, using instrumentation that can be used with various sensors (resistance thermometers, thermocouples, and pressure sensors).

Intelligent transmitters an intelligent field instrument developed from the commonly used field instruments today. It is completely powered by the loop, or supplemented by the auxiliary power supply. In addition to the other components contained, the smart transmitter mainly uses microprocessors, including the software that makes the transmitter intelligent. However, the intelligent functions of the field instrumentation are not intelligently stored in the software of the microcontrollers.Diagnostics and other security features can also be integrated into other semiconductor modules, so that the microcontroller can contain more processing software.Smart transmitters typically use standard 4 m A to 20 m A current loops, which limits the maximum power consumption of the transmitter. Therefore, the power consumption of each element must be strictly limited.
